I don't drink
It is always sad that anyone has to die, especially as young as 55 years old. Whilst no details of the cause of Charles Kennedy's death have been given, the press are already linking alcohol and in particular some political commentator's are stating that 'alcoholism is a disease'. This worries me, because giving drink dependence such a fancy title 'disease', links it too firmly to the world of matters outside our control. If you learnt someone died of Parkinson's disease, you wouldn't say 'why didn't they do something about it?', such a comment would be innexcuseable. so to offer alcoholism the same label is providing the alcoholic with an excuse not to make the supreme effort to change their own habits and therefore life.
