Just say NO!

I was watching an old episode of ‘top of the pops’ this week from 1984 and they had the song ‘just say no’ by the cast from Grange Hill, a programme I used to watch with my eldest daughter when she was growing up.
What shocked me was seeing the character Roland. In the 80’s he was depicted as the school ‘Fat kid’ just as ‘Billy Bunter’ was when I was a boy. In fact, the only obese boy in my school was cruelly nicknamed Bunter. The shock was seeing that ‘Roland’ now appears pretty normal, which just goes to show how obesity has taken over as the new norm in UK society.

I can only put this down to the amount of sugar in processed food and drink which if you start to read the labels is quite horrifying. I firmly believe sugar is completely addictive.
I never realised how much sugar was in beer and cider and wine when I was a drinker, but I should have. I used to make my own wine and part of the recipe per gallon (6 bottles) was to add one and a half bags (three pounds) of sugar. For some reason I assumed the sugar turned to alcohol and that the calorie content of the sugar miraculously disappeared! Idiot!

When I quit alcohol I lost 28 pounds or ’13 bags of sugar’ in a short space of time and without otherwise dieting, but just by quitting alcohol and drinking water and tea instead.

If you are still drinking alcoholic drinks, try and work out how much sugar you are taking in, I think you will be suitably horrified. Perhaps the sugar is one of the addictive things about alcoholic drinks and why it is so hard to contemplate living without that regular fix of your favourite tipple. Losing weight and getting healthy is a great incentive to cut the sugar and if that means find it easier to quit alcohol at the same time so much the better.
