From a less slightly less superstitious perspective, in my book ‘I Don’t Drink’ I talk about how I also had a stone as my talisman, but instead of stopping me getting drunk, my stone acted as a constant companion and reminder as to why I had quit alcohol. I poured all the negative thoughts relating to my drinking into that one stone and wrote the word ‘gout’ on it - a word which summed up a world I didn’t want to go back to - ever. I never tried amethyst when I was a drinker, but my talisman stone certainly helped me quit the stuff. It just helped to reinforce the fact I had made such a strong and total commitment to never drink again.
I don't drink
According to some article I read recently, Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethysos that literally means ‘not drunk’, and placing Amethyst stones in your drink is said to prevent you from becoming overwhelmed by the alcohol. The ancient Romans certainly believed an Amethyst stone would guard against drunkenness.
